What to wear under cycling tights?

In a word? Nothing!
That is, of course, if we’re talking tight-fitting lycra gear. If you’re in baggy mountain bike shorts that look more like casual wear, then, of course, you might want to opt for underwear (note some shorts with tights come with in-built lining that does away with this need). Going commando might seem foreign at first but trust us, it is completely normal. Why? Because you don’t need undies underneath lycra. It’s just another opportunity to create friction, which leads to chafing. Good nicks are made with the best material for keeping parts as hygienic as possible!
Now, in the middle of winter, you may want to wear cycling leggings underneath shorts, which is also entirely normal!

Do cycling shorts make a difference?

Yes, yes, yes! Are you convinced…?
They make a world of difference not only whilst you’re riding but post-ride as well. They work hard to keep your bum as protected and comfortable as possible. Many feature a back that sits slightly higher to prevent sunburn when you’re bent over riding. It’s not unusual to find water-resistant and/or windproof designs to make you as comfortable as possible, even if the weather is trying to do otherwise. They help keep sweat away from your body so you don’t arrive at your destination in a stinking, wet mess. And they look fantastic out on the bike! We could go on and on, but take our word for it!

What are bike shorts made of?

The answer ultimately depends on the brand, the collection, the riding style, and the price point. Broadly speaking, you can expect to find a combination of lycra, nylon, polyester, and cotton. The chamois is typically made of cushioning foam. However, innovative brands like the ones we stock push the boundaries regarding new, technically advanced fabrics and padding. We recommend reading the description for any individual product to get a sense of the material (and the R&D that has gone into it).
