Choosing a Wheel for Your Mountain Bike?
Looking to upgrade your MTB wheel’s? There are several factors you should consider.
The first is getting the right size wheel! The easiest way to do this is by matching up your existing wheel size to your new wheel (you won’t be able to fit a 29-inch wheel on a bike running 27.5-inch wheel.
The second thing to consider is what type of riding you’ll be doing. Larger wheel sizes such as 29-inch or 700c wheels will roll quicker (great for less technical trail runs), whereas 27.5-inch wheels are a great all-rounder great for quick turns and shredding up your local trails.
Lastly, if you’re running disc brakes look for a model with disc mounts – they will generally have ‘Disc’ in their description.
26, 29 or 27.5” What Size MTB Wheels Do I Need?
It is the best practice to match your current MTB wheel size to what your current bike is running – as your bike frame and or bike brake rotors and spacing will most likely not have the space to run a different size without major adjustments.
If you’re running a 26-inch MTB, you might struggle to find availability for replacement wheels as this is an older size that isn’t regularly produced. It’s recommended to upgrade to a 27.5’ inch bike for an all-rounder bike or a 29’ or 700c bike for something with a faster roll.
How to Put a Mudguard on Your Bike?
There are several mudguards available on the market. For rear wheel mudguards, match up the mudguard to the size of your wheel majority of these attach around your seat post or will attach underneath the bolt of your rear brake. Front mudguards also attach under your front brake bolts. You can get great products such as BBB Mud Catcher XL which attach around the tubing near your bottle cage to stop mud spray. Lastly, you can get easy to fit products such as the Selle San Marco Smart Ass Mudguard which easily sits underneath your saddle.
