Are Presta and Schrader valves interchangeable?
Presta valve inner tubes will work with Schrader rims. However, Schrader valves won’t work with Presta drilled rims. If you’re in a proper emergency and you’ve no choice but to use a Presta tube on Schrader rims then do so. However, you risk the inner tube rubbing against the rim’s valve opening and thus puncturing the tube. So the moment you can, make sure you resume a normal set-up.
How long do Co2 canisters last?
The gas contained in the canister will last a lifetime if left sealed. However, the canister itself should be monitored - you will be able to find a shelf-life printed on its outside. When not in use, keep your cartridges in a dark space at room temperature. Remember, if you are travelling not to store your canister in hand luggage. You should check individual airline safety guides as to whether or not they are even permitted in cargo.
How to use a bike Co2 canister?
Don’t be that cyclist struggling with poor-quality pumps on the side of the road or before a race. Instead, rely on a CO2 pump to get the job done in literally seconds. It might seem quite daunting if you’ve never used one of these before. However, they are straightforward so just follow these steps:
We’ll assume you’ve already inserted and partially inflated the new inner tube. But, wait - how did you do that without a hand pump, given the CO2 bike pump releases everything in one go? With your mouth! It sounds a little strange, but again, it’s pretty de rigueur and having that little bit of air in the tube will make a real difference in the overall job.
CO2 cylinders differ from brand to brand. Let’s assume you have a start-stop button accessory into which you can thread your cartridge.
Once threaded, put the CO2 head on the valve and apply pressure.
Screw the cartridge in. As you do, wait to feel for that moment when it starts to resist - this indicates you’re about to pierce the seal.
Once the pin goes through, you’ll see the tyre inflate quite quickly. You will also start to feel the cartridge go very cold, so be prepared for this.
Be mindful that CO2 leaks at a faster speed than oxygen. As such, consider this ‘fix’ a temporary solution only. Once you’re home, replace the CO2 with oxygen the old-fashioned way; otherwise, you will wake up to another flat the following day.
