What bike storage rack is best for you? Well, the good news is that whether you need a mountain or road bike stand, you have plenty of options, including:
Vertical bike stand
Typically, you lock the bike into the bike storage rack and elevate it. This helps protect it from any chance bumps and knocks at ground level, something that will cause you concern if, for example, you have a custom paint job that costs you a small fortune.
Bike floor stand
A free-standing bike rack lets you showcase your bike bling rather than hide it away. Turning your bike into a room’s focal attraction has become a big trend in home decor and certainly gets the conversation started when guests pop over!
Bike wall mount
A great option that does not require any floor space - just affix the bike storage hooks to the wall (provided it can easily take the weight), and you’re sorted!
Double bike stand
A multi-bike, vertically-stacking display unit can be a terrific means of keeping your machines all tucked together neatly and compactly.
Bike repair stand
If you enjoy doing a lot of your own bike mechanical work or repairs, then a bike work stand is essential. Bike stands for the garage enable you to do your work smoothly, giving you easy access to any part of the bike from pretty much any angle.
How to clamp a carbon frame in a bike stand
We cyclists love carbon; there’s no question about that. However, it does require extra levels of TLC, especially when securing them into a stand. If parts of your bike are not carbon (such as the seatpost), then always try to clamp the bike using these parts. However, if carbon is your only option, then proceed with extreme care and caution.
Wrap the top tube, or whatever part you are clamping, into something soft and protective such as a padded cloth or foam wrap. Do not overly wrap the area, as this will only require you to clamp down harder to ensure the bike is secure (and you don’t want to do that as you risk snapping it). Before clamping, check the pads are clear of grit and do not have any metal bits exposed, as these will scratch and damage the carbon.
Make sure the bike is perfectly balanced in the clamp. Rather than simply pressing the clamp down, try this nifty trick instead. Release the wing nut so that the clamp slackens. Now press it closed. You will see it does not close fully - by releasing the wing nuts, you have created a slack. This is good because you now have complete control over just how much you want to close the clamp. You do this by manually screwing the bottom of the clamp to move up towards the top.
How to use a bike stand
Make sure the free-standing bike rack is secure and not, for instance, on a slope. Regardless of the material of your frame, we recommend wrapping the top tube (or whatever piece of the bike you intend clamping) in a protective cloth or foam. Ensure you place the bike perfectly evenly in the bike storage rack - if you stand back, you will see it balance nicely and not tip in either direction. For clamping, we recommend you follow the above advice (‘how to clamp a carbon frame’) irrespective of whether the bike is made from carbon.
