What is a crankset on a bike?
A bike crankset features a crank arm on either side to which pedals are attached. One, two or three chainrings will accompany the part depending on the type of bike and riding style. Typically (but not always!), these chainrings bolt onto arms protruding from the crank on the right (sometimes referred to as a spider). This spider is where power metres are usually placed.
How to choose crankset length
Ok, this is important. Bike crank length is the measurement from the bottom bracket centre to the pedal axis centre. The right length for you depends on personal preference and the type of bike riding you do. Campagnolo refers to model groups like Ultra-Torque and Power-Torque. Each system uses different bottom bracket cups and bearings, so please be aware of this distinction. Don’t forget - you can touch base with our friendly team at any point to talk techs and specs. They love it!
So, longer cranks enable you to push at a harder ratio, but you sacrifice a high cadence. As such, if you’re into big, long efforts on the bikes, extended uphill sessions, or you’re time-trialling on relatively constant terrain, then a longer road bike crankset might be for you.
In contrast, shorter cranks deliver higher cadence and, therefore, might be your preference for competitive riding that involves regular changes of pace.
So, what are the most common lengths? There are three typical sizes; 165mm, 170mm and 175mm. However, it is possible to find 165 mm or 180 mm options.
What is the difference between a 10-speed & 11- speed crankset?
The chainset spec 10 / 11 / 12 is more about the chain that specifically interfaces with the cassette. As cycling evolves, cassettes have, over time, been designed to accommodate a larger quantity of gears in the same space. As a result, the chain has had to be narrowed. What is the result? It directly affects the chainring profile on the cranks (in short, it needs to be narrower for the higher gear count).
However, all that said and done, we think the focus needs to be more on the crank length, so please be sure to read the section before this.
