What is a cycling cap’s purpose?
Bike caps are a quintessential part of a cyclist’s kit. They are an iconic item of clothing to our great sport. But does a cycling hat have an actual purpose? If you thought a summer cycling cap was just to look good, you’d be partially right. It looks great! But there’s more to this piece of clothing (both the summer and winter versions) than just ticking sartorial cycling boxes. Bike caps also:
Help to keep sweat from dripping off your head and into your eyes.
Assists in keeping the low trans-seasonal sun from your eyes.
Works to keep your head temperature regulated (thermal versions provide warmth in winter), and cooler in summer (for designs featuring mesh panels and moisture-wicking material). Consider them a base layer for your noggin!
…However, if we’re honest, nailing that cycling look is probably one of the most essential features of a cycling cap!
How to wear cycling caps
There is no real art form to this. A cycling cap is like any other form of headgear, just put it on frontward facing and off you go! Wear them under your helmet but remove them when you’re not riding.
How to choose the right size bike caps?
If you’re looking to buy a road bike cap, then you want a design that sits above your ears and well above your eyebrows. In contrast, a winter hat needs to come over your ears and cover as much of the head as possible so as to maintain warmth throughout.
Which cycling caps suit:
Road cycling
A warm weather road bike cap has a fairly shallow covering for the head and a small lip visor protruding at the front. Typically, it comes in brand or team colours and is made of cotton, with some designs featuring mesh panels. During the cooler months, this is replaced by woollen or polyester skull caps, which cover a much larger head space to keep the skull ears and sometimes even neck as warm as possible.
Mountain biking
Mountain bikers typically opt for classic American-style trucker or baseball cap designs in the warmer weather, and thermal ‘beanie’ style caps or skull caps (see link above in road cycling) when the Mercury drops.
